Kahi Debe Sandesh Plot

In Kahi Debe Sandesh (1965), the story begins in a rural Chhattisgarhi village divided by caste prejudice, where a longstanding land dispute pits Shivprasad, a Brahmin landlord, against Charandas, a Satnami farmer. The conflict escalates when Shivprasad wins the court case over two acres of land, leading to Charandas's public humiliation and a night of fury in which Charandas sets out to kill Shivprasad, while Shivprasad stands armed in defense. In the midst of this standoff, Charandas's wife Phoolwati attempts suicide by jumping into a pond, but Shivprasad rescues her, an act of humanity that transforms the two enemies into sworn friends who vow never to fight again. Years later, Charandas sends his son Nayandas to study at an agricultural university in Raipur, while Shivprasad's younger sisters, Rupa and Geeta, remain in the village. After a decade, Nayandas returns as an educated young man determined to uplift the village through a cooperative society, and he grows close to Rupa, with mutual affection developing between them. However, Shivprasad's priest and a rival suitor, Kamal Narayan, conspire to sabotage their relationship by spreading rumors and maligning Nayandas's reputation, insisting that Rupa should marry within her caste. Undeterred, Nayandas and Rupa secretly marry at the village's Siddheshwar Shiv Mahadev temple, defying caste orthodoxy. The climax unfolds as the priest and Kamal Narayan attempt to expose and annul the union, but the couple's resolve and the support of progressive villagers ultimately affirm their inter-caste marriage, delivering the film's decisive message against untouchability and caste discrimination.
